Different Types of Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs)

Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) have been growing and advancing in its own industry. It has enhanced to become autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) that move materials around a facility to warehouse shelves, Automated Guided Cars (AGCs) to manage airport baggages and many more. Following are some of the different usages of AGVs.

Warehouse AGVs

With AGVs in warehouses, now incoming loading trucks can utilize the system so that AGVs can have their pallets ready for loading into the trucks automatically. In addition, this can be used for incoming unloading trucks which AGVs can correctly unload all the pallets into the correct destinations.

With warehouse AGVs, companies can help to reduce labor cost, limit damage to goods, reduce the risk of injuries, and create more usable storage space.

Shipping AMRs

Instead of workers spending their time going around aisles to pick things up, AMRs can help pickup certain pallet and bring to the workers and the workers can then pick things up from this pallet.

By doing this, companies can add in more inventory and increase output time. This has been implemented in Alibaba’s Smart Warehouse in which 70% of the shipping labor is done by AMRs. Amazon also has implemented this and has allowed increase of 50% more inventory.

Airport Baggage AGVs

Instead of using fixed complex conveyors and sorting systems, airports can use airport baggage AGVs to help move customer checked-in luggages to the correct airplanes. The AGVs transport cargo from check-in, loads into the system, retrieves, and brings it to the correct departure gate. By doing this, it decentralizes the system and thus, when there is a change of departure area, it is not an issue as each AGV can be programmed to pinpoint to the new departure area.

Future of Material Handling Robots

AGVs help to revolutionize the material handling robots in which they have undergone much changes than almost other fields. By companies embracing these solutions, it opens up more creative ways to enhance operational efficiencies, increase delivery outputs, and definitely delivery customer satisfactions. Small companies need to adopt this as to remain competitive in the global competition.
